Beginner Class series 2018 begins January 22

New class series begins January 22

Every quarter we have a class geared toward beginner dancers. This spring’s class series will begin on January 22, and run for 8 weeks.

After the 8 week series, the Monday class continues on a week-by-week basis until the summer, when we’ll have another beginner series after the San Diego Highland Games. Students are also welcome to continue dancing with any of our mixed level classes, or to take the beginner classes again.

The beginner class, taught by our enthusiastic and popular teacher, Jeanne Moody, covers the basics of moving to the music and footwork for dancing. Jeanne also teaches standard formations and patterns that comprise every dance we do, so that students can be comfortable with unfamiliar dances.

Class Details:

When:

Monday night from 7:30 to 9:30, January 22 to March 12.

Where:

Balboa Park, Casa Del Prado, room 202

Map link here

Cost:

First class is free, and the 8 week series costs $50. If you sign up on the first night, it’s $5 off!

What to wear:

Comfortable shoes and clothes you can move in. A kilt is not required. Ladies often like to wear a skirt.

Shoes:

Please wear soft-soled shoes, preferably without heels. Flip-flops or loose sandals, and stiff, ballroom dance style shoes are not a good idea. We wear Scottish Ghillies, but if you have dance shoes (ballet or jazz shoes) you can use those as well. You don’t need to buy anything special to start out with, but if you like our dancing (and we hope you will!) you’ll eventually want to invest in some nice shoes. Dancing at the Highland Games

Dancing on the grass

On June 24, Member of the San Diego Branch and dancers from Orange County attended the  San Diego Highland Games and Gathering of the Clans, and performed three demonstration dances at the main stage after the opening ceremonies.

Kisses from the dancers!

This year our dancers participated in the Parade of Clans. Gary carried our banner high and Kathy tossed chocolate kisses to the audience as we processed passed the clan booths. When we reached the main stage, the MC introduced us, and shortly afterward we danced for those gathered to watch. Marjorie was our “caller” on stage (and took these pictures!)

A lovely day for all

The weather was just about perfect for indulging in all aspects of our Scottish heritage, from bagpipes and drums, to caber toss and hammer throw, and from shortbread to haggis.

Join us dancing!

The games always full of excellent music, from fiddle, bagpipe, drum, and vocal, to didgeridoo! If you’ve always wanted to move to the music, but don’t yet know how, please join us for a class! We happen to have one for beginners starting next week.

Follow this link for information about the next dance class.
