Here is the Foreword to the book:

Oh my, yet another collection of dances! But, as with most dance books, it is an opportunity to celebrate the joy of our beloved pastime, and to marvel at this living tradition where the creativity we see in new dances and music are a continuing source of inspiration and pleasure. Scottish Country dancing allows us to participate in a centuries’ old form of dance, yet never stop contributing to its evolution.

Dances and tunes are written to celebrate people, places, and events, and the dances in this book were selected with all of those in mind. A few dances have already been published but all are dances written by, or about, people associated with the San Diego Branch. Two were devised specifically for the occasion of the Branch’s 45th Sapphire Anniversary in 2020. The jig, “Salute to San Diego,” was devised by Muriel Johnstone, with a tune to honor the memory of a beloved former Chairman who is sadly no longer with us, Navy Captain Jim Mosteller. Another was commissioned by the Branch to acknowledge Ward Fleri, one of our longest-serving teachers and Board members. Fred DeMarse (who lived in Southern California and danced with us often) devised “A-Ward Winning Reel,” accompanied by a tune composed by Andy Imbrie.

Each dance and tune has its own notes describing the occasion of its composition. It gives us great pleasure to honor each of these creative people and their contribution to our dancing enjoyment over the years.
