Beginner Classes

The Beginner Class is taught by our enthusiastic and popular teacher, Jeanne Moody, who covers the basics of moving to the music and footwork for dancing. Jeanne also teaches standard formations and patterns that comprise many dances, so students can be more comfortable with unfamiliar dances.

Beginner classes are offered throughout the year. We welcome dancers of all abilities and fitness levels to our beginner's series, from those with extensive experience in other forms of dance to those who have never danced before. You don't need to be Scottish to dance Scottish!

COVID-19 Policy, updated Jan 2024: Masks are optional at all classes and events. Please be considerate of others and avoid attending if you're showing symptoms. Vaccination is suggested but not required.

When

The next series will begin January 22nd and run until April 1st, 2024 (10 weeks). Classes are Monday nights, 7:30 to 9:30pm.

What to Wear

The most important thing is to be comfortable, wear shoes and clothes you can move in. Please bring clean, soft-soled shoes, non-marking flat shoes (no heels). Do not wear flip-flops, loose sandals or stiff, ballroom dance style shoes. You want a shoe with a flexible sole that isn't clunky. A simple flat-sole sneaker will work. For clothing, men wear pants or shorts (generally, kilts are only worn to special events, but never required). Ladies often wear skirts or dresses, but they're not required. Be comfortable!

As you advance, you'll see most dancers wear Scottish Ghillies, but you don’t need to buy anything special to start out. If you have dance shoes (ballet or jazz shoes) you can use those as well. You can also find some simpler, cheaper dance shoes at a place like Capezio or any ballet/jazz supply store. If you like our dancing (and we hope you will!) you’ll eventually want to invest in some nice shoes. You can find information about dance shoes here:
